"D" Is For Determination!

Think the National Veterans Wheelchair Games athletes are fakin' it? Not by a long shot! They're out to prove something to themselves—and move forward with life.

Puerto Rico's Deborah Dones focuses on her gold-winning javelin throw in the Open Division.
In "Better Than Ever" read about two competitors: Charles Mayes, participating in his second National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG), and rookie Mariette Firecloud, who picked up some medals and great memories. Also learn some of the history of the Games.

"We Are Family" by Jennifer Davidson presents an overview of the NVWG, as well as a sampling of personal stories of the athletes and how they benefit from the camaraderie and competition. One of the competitors was first-time participant Shirley Stinett: "I've been exposed to so many different people, abilities, and disabilities, and I realize being in a chair is not the end of your life. It's events like the Games that validate this."
